On a Collision Course
Darcie Little Badger’s second published novel is now available in paperback! This is another gorgeously imagined fantasy deeply rooted in the Lipan Apache history and storytelling that so enchanted readers of Elatsoe. Now, the fraught coexistence of two worlds hangs in the balance, and several brave individuals from each must work together to prevent a cataclysmic merging of the two.
One of these worlds is what many readers would consider our world, or the “real” world. In this world, Nina is a Lipan girl who enjoys reading and watching videos on her phone. She is also a dutiful person who helps with her father’s bookstore and is worried about her grandmother, whose home is in the path of an oncoming hurricane. She’s always felt that there is more to her family, and particularly her grandmother, than she has been told, but can’t quite put her finger on what that might be.
The other world is the land of spirits and monsters. A realm where inhabitants can choose the physical forms they take, and things are not always what they seem. Here, we find Oli, a young snake who has just left home for the first time and is trying to find his way in the world. When a potential calamity arises in Oli’s life, he discovers he has no choice but to journey into the human world to avert the disaster. Along the way, each of our two protagonists is surrounded and helped by a delightful array of unusual and marvelously conceived characters that make the journey a joy to experience. The humans are all wonderfully complex and realistically imperfect, while the animals are remarkable manifestations of their animal characteristics.
When released in hardcover, this tremendous story won a Nebula Award, an Ignyte Award, was a Newbery Honor Book, was long-listed for the National Book Award, and was on numerous “best of the year” book lists.
